I Danced For The Secret Guard-Virgins

Ten Things Of Thankful

*a little different*

Close your eyes. Take a deep, cleansing breath. Now imagine total solitude. Silence. You’ve slept in and now have the house to yourself. No kids. No spouse. Just you and your coffee. You’re smiling aren’t you? Me too. My husband took the boys to the skate park. Alone. Leaving me with a quiet house.(1)

  1. Total awesomesauce here, Beth! Soooo jazzed you included Milo. Solitude has no boundaries in our quest to have it, feel it and let it consume us. I’m thankful to start my day by reading this post from our dear friend who we absolutely cherish 🙂

    1. I asked “Gulp” his name, but I couldn’t understand him cuz I was biting his sexy lips. YUM.

The mug came from a webite: rumpus.net (ironically my therapist told me about it!)

kisses right back from TX. xoxo

  3. OMG Beth, where did you get that mug?! I want one, but dammit, my kids can read! Otters – adorable. Scary head thing – working on getting myself into the scare zone. I need your help. You can show me the way. Empty house. Coffee. Alone-ness. Jesus. Yes, please. Magic unicorn happy stuff for sure! Cute guy. Yes, please. Johnny Depp lives on my Facebook ad sidebar. This makes me very happy.

    1. Mr. Depp rocks my socks off. *shiver*

I got the mug from rumpus.net. I don’t know anything about the site (my therapist pointed me to the mug!) and it’s been about 2 years since I bought it, but I assume it’s still available.

You must love the creepy dolls, Linda! Bring them into your heart. They’re so awful they’re awesome, but there are rules:
      1. don’t look them in the eye
      2. don’t ever buy one and bring it home
      3. always photo them, and then text your friends the photo at random times. Enjoy the freak out that ensues. Lol

  4. Yes. I could eat raw broccoli and hummus for every meal. Or at least once every day. And I probably do. Otters always make me think of my dear departed daddy. He loved the otters. Makes me think of going to the zoo with him when I was a little girl. And both our cats are rescues — and our beta fish. Rescued from the shelf at Walmart.

    1. Beth keeps breaking them! I’ve had to punish two of them already because they totally wanted to quit the day job and pursue…less important and more carnal things.

      It absolutely will not do!

  6. Solitude is blissful, as is blossom. And I’m envious that you get to go hiking and see such beautiful things already, but my time will come when the world is once again filled with achingly blue skies, fluffy white clouds and pink-and-white across the trees, and that sweet, spicy perfume of spring and Growing Things.

    Cannot WAIT!

The creepy head is creepy, but still not as terrifying as a stone angel. No way.

What’s so good about Ethiopian food then? What’s it even consist of? Is it spicy? What are the main ingredients?

Keep your board of beautiful men away from my GuardVirgins! And you’re gonna have to learn to dance so you can steal the book without them all wanting to quit the day job 😉 You’re too good! Can’t you do the YMCA for them or summat?

Awesome list. Painting is AMAZING, and I love that you teach it. That’s very cool. Otters are better than minks, and dogs make a lot of people happy, I know, so YAY! 😀

    1. oops, I thought replied to this yesterday!

Nothing is as creepy as those stone figures. They belong in cemeteries. Wrong – just. wrong.

Ethiopian food uses garam marsala, cumin, curry, ginger, garlic, etc. All those amazing, warm spices that I love. Some dishes are spicy, but all are super flavorful. They use a lot of veggies and lentils. Also lots of savory meat dishes, which I don’t eat, but I have before and they’re amazing.

      1. Nope, perhaps you heard me crying in a corner somewhere, and that finally prompted you to respond?

Ahhh no, they belong NO-WHERE ON PLANET EARTH. They’re terrifying. Have you seen them in Dr Who? They genuinely scare me! The ones in cemeteries are beautiful and peaceful.

We always used to have garam marsala in the cupboard, but somehow we don’t any more. Ginger, cumin, and garlic sound good though. Spicy is good. Though I’ve never gotten into cooking lentils. They feel like they’d be a hassle.

  7. I can’t even imagine sleeping in and having the house to myself. That sounds like absolute heaven to me too! I can’t think it about it too much actually…..
Painting is awesome, my son used to love it and my husband and I would do our best. It is therapeutic.
Good lookin’ guy, good lookin DOG.
I love trees, too. My arm tattoo and our wedding rings have branches on them. Something so cool about a good, twisty branch.

  8. Your mug is awesome, Beth and I’m so jealous you’ve got the house to yourself (or did, when you wrote this). We had a group play date this morning. Four moms and six kids. It was LOUD. Like really loud. I love that your dog turned you from being a cat person, too, because cats are kindof gross. Just saying.

  9. I want a sign that says what your mug says, so I can hang it above the door when I walk in and slap it for good luck.

I used to look like that dude, back when I was in college. Meaning, sometimes, I didn’t shave either.

  10. There is nothing like solitude…except maybe Mr. Gulp. Is he one of the Guard Virgins? Because I can totally see why you’d go there. The mug is also awesome…but Kidzilla can read and then I’d have to explain it…and then she’d explain it to the Kindergarten class. So no. And the otters are too cute – they are our favorite stop at the local zoo. So funny!

    Have a great week!

  11. Alone time is gold! I think it’s the one thing post-kids that there isn’t enough of. I’d never trade realities but as my 4-year-old thumps on my locked bathroom door demanding to “share your privacy with you PLEASE MOMMY” I miss quiet.

The dolly perked my interest – yes creepy. And so lucky you have flowers budding already!

  13. #3 – he messaged me on Match.com last week and said that he wanted to ask me out but he kinda felt like I might be too hot for him and it made him feel intimidated. (Not.) And I could eat Ethipoian food three times a day too! And I fostered rescue dogs last year with my kids. We are soul sisters. Or something….

  14. It’s wonderful to meet someone who shares my appreciation for solitude. I love my family, but between my job and home life with a daughter, her crazy, emotionally-needy dog and a live-in father-in-law in failing health, I rarely have any true solitude.
    And I miss solitude…

  15. You had me at #1. I can’t wait for some silence and solitude. I’m counting down until May when my some can start at the Kita. I’ll have my mornings ALL. TO. MYSELF. And I love that mug too, along with the trees and spring buds and everything else on this list!

  16. Ugh, I am so behind on my blog reading, but I lurve this post.
The tree, especially. I, too, love trees, but I’m kind of snobby about it. I think everyone likes to say they love trees, but I REALLY love them. I sense your sincerety, though, and will give you credit for REALLY loving them, too, since you took a picture of such a gorgeous one. See, a snob.
Spring in TX starts in February! I already miss it! There’s a pile of snow in my yard that’s as high as my shoulder. And it’s nasty and gray. It will be here for months and more snow is predicted this week.
I do not think it is possible to see an otter and not automatically feel happier. They’re just too cute. And, Ethiopian food. The last I had was The Dude’s leftovers from a meal out. I inhaled them for breakfast.
Finally, I don’t quite understand the connection, but you and Lizzi have me thinking of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers lately. Your #1.

    Heaven, I’m in heaven,
And the cares that hung around me through the week
Seem to vanish like a gambler’s lucky streak

But you weren’t out dancing cheek to cheek, were you?

    Like

    1. depends what cheeks you’re referring to. 🙂

OMG – I’m a tree snob, too! I cringe when someone says they love trees, cuz I’m all, NO I LOVE TREES. I paint them. I sit in them. I worship them. I seek them and photo them. and I adore YOU for loving them for reals too!

wishing you warm, Spring days sooooooon!!!

I have t-o-n-s of doll head photos. I take them everywhere, but mostly antique shops. That particular one I found in Fredericksburg, TX at a trade days. They are creepy! But they’re so awful they’re brillz.

  18. Mathair and I are thankful for… oh dear God, who are we kidding, that pic/your#3. I’m usually a blonde girl (gotta love me sum Alexander Skarsgard), but I’d definitely be willing to swing for the brunettes for that slice. Yum. Your doggie is so adorable. We’re sending doggy love to him all the way from the Smokey Mountains. 😉 Great post, Bethie.

Thank you for the (gulp!) inspiration that I assume has been added to your most awesome Pinterest board. While I love the phone photos, trees, and otters I have to tell you the weird doll head…..cah-ree-py! What is up with that?

  20. Otters are so cool. The closest we get to that level of cute downunder is our platypus. It looks like a bit of a biological garage sale, but they scoot around rivers doing cute things unless you pick one up and then the male has this giant spike behind each back leg with which to inflict serious put-me-the-fuck-down pain…welcome to Australia, where everything is trying to kill you. Haa! So, yeah, otters.

    Like

    1. “biological garage sale” hahaha. Hysterical. Platypuses/platypi (WTF is the plural of Platypus??) are pretty cute. I can see how water-frolicking would be a huge appeal…except for the spike thingies.

  22. Ooh. I’ve never tried Ethiopian food. Hmmm. Must add to my list of things to try next time I visit Chicago. I’d try something local, but I find the food to be not nearly as tasty here as they are back in Chi-town.
